Irish Apple Crumble
A warm, comforting Irish-style apple crumble with tender, spiced apples and a buttery oat topping. Perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of custard!
Ingredients
For the Apple Filling:
- 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Bramley), peeled, cored, and sliced
- ⅓ cup (65g) granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
For the Crumble Topping:
- 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
- ½ cup (100g) brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ cup (115g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
- ¾ cup (75g) rolled oats
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Instructions
1. Prepare the Apple Filling
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish (8x8-inch or similar).
- Toss apples: In a large bowl, mix apple slices with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, vanilla, and flour.
- Transfer to dish: Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
2. Make the Crumble Topping
- Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, oats, and salt.
- Cut in butter: Add the cold cubed butter and mix with your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Top the apples: Evenly sprinkle the crumble mixture over the apples.
3. Bake & Serve
- Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
- Cool slightly before serving warm with ice cream, whipped cream, or custard.
Tips & Variations
- Use Irish whiskey: Add 1 tablespoon of Irish whiskey to the apples for extra depth.
- Swap walnuts or pecans into the topping for extra crunch.
- Use different apples: A mix of tart and sweet apples adds great flavor.
- Make it gluten-free: Substitute flour with almond flour or gluten-free flour mix.
